Washington Post – What Hope Is Left for the Planet?

April 22 @ 11:00 am EDT

When climate news is depressingly grim, is it possible to feel optimism?

For The Washington Post Magazine’s April 18 Earth Day Issue cover story, staff writer David Montgomery spoke with scientists, activists, nature writers, and philosophers—people whose work asks them to deeply engage with nature and the environment—to find out how and where they find the hope to keep going.

Join the Post on Earth Day 2021—Thursday, April 22—at 11:00 am for a discussion about this story. Joining David will be Washington Post Magazine articles editor Whitney Joiner.

Among the topics they’ll be discussing:

• How this story developed—a behind-the-scenes look at how it was shaped, from the initial idea to the final cover story version.

• How what David learned in his reporting changed the way he thinks about climate change and the environment.

• How working on this story ultimately led David to some unexpected conclusions—for one thing, despair is not necessarily a problem.
