Earth Optimism

The Smithsonian Conservation Common’s Earth Optimism initiative is changing the conservation narrative from one that focuses on problems and perils to highlighting impactful solutions. By celebrating what’s working in conservation we seek to inspire action and move the global community from a sense of loss to one of hope and finding solutions to save our planet.

Earth Optimism engages millions through social media, workshops, webinars, and our annual Summit. Partnerships and scientific collaboration also allow us to change how science is communicated.

We encourage you to join the #EarthOptimism movement and help us move the conservation conversation forward. Together we can make a lasting impact.

Smithsonian’s Earth Optimism is changing the conversation from the traditional doom-and-gloom, science-only approach to an interdisciplinary, intergenerational one full of optimism, stories, and solutions. We are leveraging the power of the Smithsonian to work across the sciences, arts, history, and culture, bringing scientists and curators together in conversation.

Throughout the month of April, and particularly the week of Earth Day, we’re co-hosting a series of virtual events and conversations surrounding everything from climate change to the future of our oceans; youth activism to science diplomacy; and sustainable design to global health.

Earth Optimism events have reached 1 billion people so far and inspired citizens to become good stewards of our shared home.

In 2020, the Earth Optimism Summit made a quick pivot from an in-person event to an all-digital event. During that challenging moment, our sponsors and donors showed unwavering support. We would like to take this moment, as we prepare for Earth Optimism 2021, to again recognize all of the individuals and organizations that made the 2020 Earth Optimism Virtual Summit a reality. Thank you for your support!
